Trace elements As, Co, Fe, Hg, Se, Zn and Cr were determined in muscle tissue, gills and liver and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes (NAEs) were observed in 7 fish species (Chaetodipterusfaber, Paralanchurusbrasiliensis, Micropogoniasfurnieri, Achiruslineatus, Genyatremusluteus, Menticirrhus Americanos and Micropogoniasfurnieri), from two estuarine regions subject to different levels of anthropogenic impact (preserved and polluted) to provide information on contamination levels. The bioaccumulation in C. faber suggested that it should be proposed as a bioindicator of pollution in estuaries. The hydrological data: temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen characterized the estuarine waters. A paradoxical result relating to As, Co, Fe and Zn concentrations was that, in general, these were higher in the fish species of the Cananeia estuary (a preserved area), while Hg concentrations and NAEs were higher in the species of the Santos-São Vicente estuary (SSV) (the polluted area). The bioaccumulation in tissue-organs decreased in the following order: liver>gill>muscle, with the exception of Hg that was liver>muscle with no detection in gills. Concerning the genotoxic effects, C. faber showed a more significant NAE, besides clastogenic effects, demonstrated by the greater frequency of micronuclei. Differences found between the fish species could be related to their feeding habits and to salinity. This is a contribution to making fishery efforts more profitable and enhancing the bioindicator bank.

Despite many good policies and institutions, the coastal environment of Langkawi continues to deteriorate. This could be due to lack of effective governance as well as unregulated waste discharge. Evidences collected from the literature during 1996 to 2013 also revealed a significant increase in the concentrations of Zn (R2 = 0.78) and Pb (R2 = 0.12) in the sediment. This appears to be the result of large volume of terrestrial runoff that brings these metals originating from extensive anthropogenic activities. It is a vital indicator of coastal pollution. It is a matter of concern that in many cases Pb concentration in the sediment exceeded the world average value 20 Î¼g/g as well as Canadian Interim Sediment Quality Standard of 35 Î¼g/g for the coastal areas. Similarly, the metal pollution index (MPI) measured over a period of 2007 to 2009 in fish also indicated an increasing trend of pollution in Langkawi. The maximum MPI value (4.87) was recorded in Spanish mackerel. Since pollution of coastal environment has serious implications for marine biodiversity and health of seafood consumers, measures are required to address this problem. Use of constructed wetland might be effective in reducing the coastal pollution as this will filter the effluent and waste before their mixing with the coastal water. Furthermore, enabling the stakeholders to play the environmental stewardship role will ensure better governance of coastal ecosystem and effective implementation of policies, envisaging an improved monitoring of waste/effluent discharge into the coastal marine environment. These measures are among the actions necessary for achieving a sustainable coastal environment of Langkawi.

“…Due to intense industrial activity in the inner area of the SSV and the disposal of domestic waste by the submarine emissary in Santos Bay, the SSV has been biomonitored since 2004. This biomonitoring considers the bioaccumulation pattern of toxic and non-toxic metals, such as Pb, Cd, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Hg (Azevedo et al 2009, 2012a, 2012c, as well as the expression of biochemical, histopathological, and genotoxic biomarkers in the bioindicator species Cathrops spixii (Azevedo et al 2012b(Azevedo et al , 2013 and shows major damage in catfish from the SSV, along with higher levels of metals. thereby, the investigation of other fish species with potential use as bioindicators of contamination in estuarine environments is very important and may be used as an additional tool in biomonitoring programs as a way to take advantage of all species collected by the net during sampling, such as that in the SSV and CAN estuaries, in the São Paulo State, Brazil.…”
