Abstract: The redox-transmetalation ligand-exchange reaction of ytterbium or calcium metal with 2 equiv of pentaphenylcyclopentadiene (C5Ph5H) and 1 equiv of HgPh2 in thf afforded the solvent-separated ion pairs (SSIPs) [M(thf)6][C5Ph5]2 (M = Yb, Ca), which were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analyses. Addition of toluene to the isolated SSIPs led to the precipitation of the homoleptic sandwich complexes [M(C5Ph5)2] (M = Yb, Ca). In the reaction of barium metal with C5Ph5H and HgPh2 the corresponding SSIP was obs… Show more

“…The related reduction of Yb III to Yb II by [(Me 3 Si) 2 N] À anion has been previously reported for the series of bis(indenyl) Yb III amides formed in the amine elimination reactions of [(Me 3 Si) 2 N] 3 Yb [10a] with substituted indenes. [10b] Formerly the formation of free radical (C 5 Ph 5 )C was detected in the oxidationr eactions of (C 5 Ph 5 ) 2 Yb by various oxidative agents; [11] howevert he authors did not succeed to isolate the ytterbium-containing oxidation products. The second pathway seems to us to be the most plausible.…”

“…The SmÀOb ond lengths (2.561(4)-2.734(4) )f alls into the range characteristic for Sm II complexes 2.563(3)-2.735(3) ). [14,15] The complexes composed of separated ion pairs have been formerlyd escribed for cyclopentadienyl [11,16] and heterocyclopentadienyl [16a] Ln II derivatives, and their stabilityw as shown to be effected by the nature of the anionic ligand as wella sb y the Lewis bases coordinated to the Ln ion. [16] Therefore heterolytic cleavage of the p-bonds between Sm and tBu 4 Carb ligands promoted by the coordination of polydentate Lewis bases and to the formation of ionicc omplexes proved to be common for both sandwich and half-sandwichcomplexes.…”

“…TheBa1 À C1 distance of 2.810(4) is slightly shorter than those in complexes Ba[CH(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 2 (THF) 3 (2.827(3) and 2.879-(3) ) [17] and (N^N)Ba[CH(SiMe 3 ) 2 ](THF) 2 (2.840 (7) and 2.833 (7) )( N^N = iminoanilide). [18] TheB a1-Cent1 distance of 2.799 is significantly longer than those in sandwich complexes (Cp BIG ) 2 Ba (2.667 ) [15b] and (C 5 Ph 5 ) 2 Ba (2.670 ), [19] suggesting strong steric repulsion between the Cp Ar ligand and CH(SiMe 3 ) 2 group.…”

“…2-Sr and 4-Sr exhibited comparable activities towards alkenes hydrogenation, indicating that THF and DABCO played asimilar effect on catalytic reactions.Compared with 2-Ca, 4-Sr and 4-Ba showed higher reactivity as well as wider substrate scope (entry [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Di-substituted conjugated alkenes (trans-stilbene and a-Me-styrene) and tri-substituted activated alkenes (trans-1,2-diphenylpropene and phenylcyclohexene) could be fully converted within 1-10 hw ith the highly reactive 4-Ba (entry 14,16,18,20).…”
