Accelerating climate research and action in cities through advanced science-policy-practice partnerships

Abstract: Cities have become increasingly recognized as key sites for climate research and action. Recently, these efforts have been significantly advanced through science-policy-practice partnerships. The objective of this paper is to assess how these partnerships are structured, the research and action agenda that underpins them, and how this agenda is being articulated and implemented. The assessment also helps to define some of the conceptual and operational gaps faced by the science-policy-practice community and ho… Show more

“…It is noted that the Sendai Framework is inspired by the concept of Social Capital, where Robert Putnam describes it as a set of social aspects, such as relationship networks, norms, and trust that allows action and cooperation for mutual benefit (PISTORE, 2013) Based on the principles and concepts outlined, it is noted that climate responses within the dynamics of Brazilian cities will only happen through the cooperation of several actors, in various instances of action and, concerning the search for climate financing, due to the complexity of the actions to be carried out. These actors will not be limited to the federal, state, and municipal financial spheres, but rather to international sources such as Green Climate Funds that target their deliveries in large-scale climate adaptation and mitigation projects (SOLECKI et al, 2021).…”

“…1 of September 14, 2023. Brazilian Cities have been the main victims of climate tragedies and, thus, Sectoral Plans should include ways to face environmental threats where residents and critical infrastructure of cities are inserted(SOLECKI et al, 2021).The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, adopted at the Third United Nations World Conference in Sendai, Japan, established principles whose main responsibility is to prevent and reduce disaster risk, including through cooperation (SOUTHERN AFRICA DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY -SADC, 2015).…”

“…This includes incorporating a land-use planning frame in consideration of urban mobility and drawing on research into the design of 15-minute cities (Moreno et al 2021). Within CAPs, there are also considerations for how to support socio-cultural change, such as via a focus on public engagement, public participation, and messaging (Solecki et al 2021).…”

“…The rst IPCC assessment to assign a separate chapter to climate hazards and adaptation in the urban environment was AR5 (Fifth Assessment Report), thereby providing a stimulus for international networks and initiatives that now concentrate on cities and climate change (Trundle et al 2019). Through innovation, employment, education, economic variety, economies of scale, and cultural Interaction, cities can catalyze transformative change (IPCC 2018; Solecki et al 2021). Therefore it is important to develop adaptation measures because it minimizes the negative impact that extreme weather events have on the built, social, and ecological environment (UCCRN 2018).…”
