Abstract: Background: CTCs represent a heterogeneous population of cells with different phenotypes and biological values. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) gives rise to cells with stem cell-like properties with increased resistance to chemotherapy that may be under detected by currently approved assays.
