Abstract: BACKGROUND Ancient traditional physicians from many countries used leeching to treat a wide range of diseases for thousands of years. Leech saliva contains a large number of peptides and proteins, which have anti-thrombotic, antimicrobial, antitumor and anti-metastatic activities.
