Abstract: There has been limited analysis of the effects of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on liver metabolism and circulating endogenous metabolites. Here we report the findings of a plasma metabolomic investigation of HCC patients using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-QTOFMS), random forests machine learning algorithm and multivariate data analysis. Control subjects included healthy individuals as well as patients with liver cirrhosis or acute myelo… Show more

“…Five metabolites quinaldic acid, β-sitosterol, arachidyl carnitine, oleamide and tetradecanal were observed for the first time. Nine metabolite lysophosphatidylethanolamines, glycerophosphocholine, LPCs, CDCA glycine conjugate and Lphenylalanine had been reported as serum metabolite biomarkers for HCC diagnosis in previous research [39][40][41].…”

“…In solid malignancies, the hypoxic conditions found at the core of the tumors induce adaptive pathways aimed at maintaining lipid synthesis, homeostatic pH and cell survival [6]. The resulting metabolic changes correlate with poor prognosis, poor treatment response and recurrence in diseases such as breast, liver and brain cancer [7][8][9][10]. Emerging therapeutic approaches have thus targeted lipid synthesis to counter the effects of metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells [11,12].…”

“…11 Analyzing and verifying the specifically early biomarkers of a disease, metabolomics enables us to better understand pathological processes, substance metabolic pathways. 12 Compared with traditional diagnostic methods, even small changes of metabolites can help to detect early pathologic changes more sensitively. These large-scale analyses of metabolites are intimately bound to novel mass spectrometry (MS) technology analyzers in combination with hyphenated techniques.…”
