A weighted—averaging regression and calibration model for inferring total phosphorus concentration from diatoms in British Columbia (Canada) lakes

Abstract: 1. The relationship between surfidal sediment diatom taxa (Bacillariophyceae) and measured Hmnological variables in forty-six British Columbia lakes was explored using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Lake-water total phosphorus concentration (TP), maximum lake depth, conductivity, and calcium concentration each accounted for independent and statistically significant directions of variation in the distribution of diatom taxa. 2. Weighted-averaging (WA) models were developed to infer lake-water TP from … Show more

“…Within paleolimnological approaches, past [TP] has been quite usually inferred from diatom remains (Hall and Smol 1992). Because some long-term monitoring data were also available, we were able to compared DI-TP to measured water [TP].…”

“…We also determined concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), as this material can play an important role in attenuating light in lake ecosystems (25). Epilimnetic Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) are unicellular photoautotrophic algae that are highly sensitive to changes in nutrient concentrations, and often dominate primary production in oligotrophic lakes (27,28). We determined diatom community structure in surface sediments of the subset of 18 lakes as well as down-core assemblages in six lakes (three GSF, three SF).…”

“…However, the models from the 251-lake dataset represent an improvement over many of these smaller calibration datasets. For example, the 46-lake dataset of Hall and Smol (1992) from B.C. had a relatively high apparent coefficient of determination of 0.78, which declined to 0.28 when bootstrapped (Cumming et al, 1995), due to a lack of redundancy in taxa that could not be reproduced upon bootstrapping.…”
