A Vision-Based System for Internal Pipeline Inspection

Abstract: The internal inspection of large pipeline infrastructures, such as sewers and waterworks, is a fundamental task for the prevention of possible failures. In particular, visual inspection is typically performed by human operators on the basis of video sequences either acquired on-line or recorded for further offline analysis. In this work, we propose a vision-based software approach to assist the human operator by conveniently showing the acquired data and by automatically detecting and highlighting the pipeline… Show more

“…Omnidirectional vision sensors allow for a full view of the internal surface of the pipe. The full view is either produced by a catadioptric camera system [ 23 , 44 , 50 , 55 , 58 ] or by the use of fish-eye lenses [ 9 , 25 , 28 , 29 , 32 , 53 ]. Omnidirectional vision sensors provide a view of the entirety of the pipe with just a single sensor and are used in combination with laser profilometry [ 9 , 23 , 44 , 50 , 55 ] or stereo matching [ 25 , 29 , 32 , 53 , 58 ] approaches.…”

“…Visual computing technologies play an important role in several manufacturing tasks. Particularly nowadays, their role is crucial due to the new Industry 4.0 applications including manufacturing inspection [1], quality control [2], reverse engineering [3], digital twin [4] as well as autonomous repair operations. While the use of this new type of applications will expand, the number of the digital 3D models will be also increased, resulting in the interest for more accurate 3D model processing.…”

“…To monitor the conditions of the inlet and outlet pipes of the CSO, several pipe inspection methods have had either destructive or non-destructive testing approaches proposed and implemented in the literature [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Currently, closed circuit television (CCTV) methods [ 16 , 17 ] are one of the most common ways to survey the pipe. Several fast and efficient alternative methods to analyse the condition of a sewer pipe wall objectively were proposed [ 8 , 10 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”
