A unilateral pelvic kidney with variant vasculature: clinical significance

Abstract: The incidence of ectopic pelvic kidney accounts for ~1 of 2500 live births. Although pelvic kidneys are most often asymptomatic, they may be associated with several pathologies including hypertension. As pelvic kidney results from a brief interference of the ascension of the developing kidney, it is frequently accompanied by an atypical and variable blood supply. The presence of multiple arteries and veins and their abnormal course and morphology are associated with surgical and radiological significance. Malr… Show more

“…Multiple renal arteries are the most common variant among ectopic cases, with an incidence rate of 20%-30%. Considering the increase of renal transplants and laparoscopic techniques, detailed knowledge of ectopic kidneys is essential [ 6 , 7 ]. The presented case has a single renal artery.…”

“…The pelvic kidney vasculature is so variable as a result of remaining of its embryological blood supply. 5 The prevalence of precaval right renal artery has been reported between 0.8% and 5%. The wide variation in prevalence rates may be due to distinct study populations (i.e., racial differences) and/or differences in study design.…”

“…It is not uncommon for ectopic kidneys to have double or triple arterial flows. 14 The arteries supplying pelvic kidneys may arise from the iliac arteries, aorta, hypogastric arteries or middle sacral arteries. 9 When the single arterial supply to a normal kidney becomes compromised, there is no compensatory anastomotic flow to protect against ischemia.…”
