A UML Profile for Modeling Mobile Information Systems

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we propose a framework for modeling mobile information systems. Mobility introduces several challenges and issues that impact the development of mobile systems. As a result, we want applications running on mobile devices to exhibit certain traits; they should be aware of the mobility and be adaptive to the changes that occur due to it. Literature has identified several types of mobility -among them, physical and logical mobility. The former pertains to tangible mobile entities like cars… Show more

“…The MOWAHS approach motivates our research and demonstrates that much work has yet to be done on mobility-related requirements [11]. The research by Dehlen and Aagedal stressed the importance of certain attributes in mobile devices on exhibiting mobility and its entities for physical, logical and vertical mobility for modeling mobile information systems with UML [13]. Also, Fig.…”

“…Like any type of information system, the mobile variety has some unique mobile requirements engineering as one key success factor. The increasing particularities of mobile information systems related services and the mobile enterprise [1] may require new modeling languages for the enterprise analysis and requirements engineering stages, or adaptations of existing modeling languages, some proposals in this direction already exist [13][14] [15]. The increased mobile services introduces quest for new modeling constructs, it might be wise to get a thorough understanding of what requirements might specifically emerge for a mobile IS that would not be present for other IS, and then consider whether this mandates a need for new modeling constructs.…”

“…Several UML profiles with which to model the mobile aspects [12,22] and applications based on Grid services [10] exist which can be used in this analysis activity to model the static and dynamic behavior, completing the use cases with other UML diagrams oriented towards mobile systems and Grid environments such as activity diagrams, deployment, classes, interaction, etc., which capture these specific aspects of the mobile Grid systems. This structural view is a first vision of the architecture that will be built in the following design activity.…”

“…For mobile application development also we have to follow the basic steps of software engineering. The existence of a solid development framework and methodology allows applications to be developed more rapidly and with higher quality, in addition to promote consistency [1]. As mentioned before, there are different platforms that are used in the mobile market: Symbian, Blackberry, iOS, Andriod, Windows phone and Plam"s webOS.…”
