A Taxonomic Revision of the Genus Hedysarum L. (Fabaceae-Hedysareae) in Iran

Abstract: Hedysarum is the second largest genus of the tribe Hedysareae (Fabaceae), in Iran. Considering the rising number of species in Iran, a taxonomic revision of the genus is provided, except for a Hedysarum wrightianum group. As a complementary treatment, a diagnostic key to the species and detailed morphological descriptions are supplied. Based on the reliable molecular phylogeny and morphological evidence in the current study, the taxonomy of some species of H. subsect. Crinifera was re-examined. H. criniferum v… Show more

“…Most species of Hedysarum subsect. Multicaulia are distributed in the western part of Western Asia (northwestern Iran, northern part of Iraq and Syria, Transcaucasia, eastern part of Turkey) and in the Mediterranean region (Lebanon, Syria, western Turkey) (Akpinar & Yildiz, 1999; Hoşgören & Ertekin, 2018; Nafisi & al., 2021) in arid and semiarid habitats (Duan & al., 2015). It is likely that these species of H .…”

“…These species exhibit characteristics of H. sect. Hedysarum, including a strongly developed stem, downcurved flowers in the inflorescence, triangular calyx teeth that are shorter than or as long as the calyx tube, and compressed, more or less reticulate veined pods without setae (Choi & Ohashi, 2003;Nafisi & al., 2019Nafisi & al., , 2021.…”

“…Hedysarum L., the largest genus of the tribe Hedysareae (Fabaceae), is distributed in temperate Eurasia, NW Africa, W Canada to W & Central U.S.A [ 1 3 ]. The non-monophyletic identity of Hedysarum in the nuclear tree topology, in contrast to plastid topology, has been confirmed in previous molecular phylogenetic studies [ 1 , 4 , 5 ].…”
