A systematic review of strategies to reduce sugar‐sweetened beverage consumption among 0‐year to 5‐year olds

Abstract: Evidence suggests that interventions successful at reducing SSB consumption among 0-year to 5-year olds often focused on vulnerable populations, were conducted in preschool/daycare settings, specifically targeted only SSBs or only oral hygiene, included multiple intervention strategies and had higher intervention intensity/contact time.

“…The present analyses, based on the most recent 2015-2016 NHANES data confirm that the consumption of SSB in the US continues to drop [1,6,27,28]. While SSB may not be the biggest source of dietary energy for anyone except teenagers, they are the main source of added sugars in the American diet [29].…”

“…See Figure for study selection flow diagram. To evaluate the methodological quality, validity, and risk of bias in each study, researchers used the Downs and Black checklist to assess randomized studies (maximum score of 28) and the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale to assess non‐randomized studies (maximum score of 9) with modifications based on predefined study protocols . The first (AC) or senior (AP) author resolved any disagreements between initial reviewers.…”

“…By targeting such factors, lifestyle interventions may be able to promote the water intake among children. A positive effect of such lifestyle interventions has also been found for related outcomes such as the reduction of SSB consumption and reduction of weight gain . Although limited, recent evidence provides some indication that water consumption among children may indeed be promoted by interventions .…”
