A systematic review of population-based studies on lipid profiles in Latin America and the Caribbean

Abstract: We aimed to study time trends and levels of mean total cholesterol and lipid fractions, and dyslipidaemias prevalence in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Systematic-review and meta-analysis of population-based studies in which lipid (total cholesterol [TC; 86 studies; 168,553 people], HDL-Cholesterol [HDL-C; 84 studies; 121,282 people], LDL-Cholesterol [LDL-C; 61 studies; 86,854 people], and triglycerides [TG; 84 studies; 121,009 people]) levels and prevalences were laboratory-based. We used Scopus, LILA… Show more

“…In the present study, the mean cholesterol, (21) .In a study by Larco et alHDL and LDL were reported to be 193, 139, 47 and 120, respectively (22) .Finally, by descriptive comparison of these values with the values obtained from the present study, it can be inferred that blood lipid levels are probably outside the normal range in the population with corneal arcus, this is especially true for higher triglycerides in the present study when compared with previous studies. However, this relationship is not conclusively provable due to the lack of a control group in our study.…”

“…There are accumulating data showing that the burden of ASCVD and dyslipidemia is increasing across developing countries: while age-specific ASCVD in many high-income countries is declining, the prevalence of plasma lipid disorders in the Asia-Pacific region is rising [ 14 , 17 ]; similar data were reported for Mexico [ 19 ]. In a recent review, Carrillo-Larco et al demonstrated that the most common type of dyslipidemia in Latin America and the Caribbean region since 2005 is low HDL-C level (48%), followed by elevated TG (21%) and high LDL-C (20%) [ 21 ]. Xing et al [ 22 ] reported a low prevalence of dyslipidemia in the northeast China region—35.8%, higher among urban residents than among rural ones (49.5 vs. 30.2%), and in women than in men (37.6 vs. 33.0%).…”

“…Los resultados de los estudios mencionados anteriormente presentan una relación cercana con nuestros resultados, puesto que el desequilibrio lipídico de una persona se manifiesta luego de años de comportamientos alimenticios inadecuados o de desórdenes en los estilos de vida. Por ello, la instauración de estilos de vida saludables debe iniciarse eficazmente en edades tempranas, con la finalidad de que estos se mantengan en posteriores etapas (20).…”
