Against the backdrop of the partially idle resources of conventional railways and the continuous growth of suburban leisure tourism demand, it is required to develop railway tourism by utilizing the disused resources of conventional railways in China. Therefore, restoring, analyzing, and evaluating the visual landscapes seen when travelling on conventional trains are extremely important. The innovation of this study is proposing a dynamic visual landscape interface for disused railways, which establishes a connection between the "seeing" and "perceiving" for passengers and describes the visual landscape they observe. By analyzing dynamic visual factors of passengers and combining DEM data, the temporal-spatial relationship of the visual landscapes along the railway is described as a dynamic visual landscape interface model. Based on this, the study proposes criteria and indicators for analyzing and evaluating the dynamic visual landscapes of railways, using typical landscapes along the Jingmen Railway as an example for evaluation and validation. The research results provide analytical and decision-making tools for repurposing disused railways as tourist railways.

Questions of sustainability and resilience surrounding the infrastructure that makes up our society are becoming ever-more relevant and increasingly important to address. Environmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability has been launched as a unique outlet for the publication of such work, bringing together a multidisciplinary, and in some places fragmented, community and creating a home journal for their research. Environmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability will focus on all kinds of infrastructure and all facets of sustainability, not just environmental assessment and protection but also economic and social factors. All research methodologies are encouraged including qualitative, quantitative, experimental, theoretical and applied work. This editorial serves as an introduction to our new journal, lays out our aims and intentions, and introduces the first published articles which we hope will provide a flavour of what’s to come.

The value of historical railways and their important role in social, economic, technical, political, and cultural terms has led to their inclusion as industrial heritage attractions. This study aims to evaluate the heritage value of the Oraviţa–Anina linear railway, the first mountain railway in Romania. The assessment of the value of the railway involved both quantitative and qualitative methods. The value was assessed on the basis of a rigorous quantitative evaluation of key attributes of heritage railway, using a system of criteria and indicators. On the other hand, the selected qualitative methodology facilitated the critical interpretation of the perception of the local community as a beneficiary of the railway heritage and as an active stakeholder involved in its reuse. The qualitative evaluation of the heritage railway was also highlighted based on a critical analysis of tourists’ perceptions. The results indicate the usefulness of a mixed methodology for the complex evaluation of the value of a heritage railway and its sustainable capitalization. Railway tourism is a sustainable solution meant to stimulate interest in learning about local history and culture, and can at the same time contribute to the fulfillment of knowledge of the motivations that drive tourist demand.
