The paper presents a comparison of phase-shifted and modified level-shifted carrier-based PWM strategies for a three-level H-bridge flying capacitor converter. While the optimal voltage quality of the nearest level switching may be obtained using both of them, natural voltage balancing dynamics is different. Using elementary circuit theory and switched system time domain analysis, it is possible to obtain simple analytical averaged voltage balancing dynamics solutions. Modified levelshifted carrier-based PWM is shown to provide much faster voltage balancing dynamics, especially, for small DC PWM voltage commands and AC PWM modulation indices. The explanation of this fact is obtained by analysis of zero voltage state sequences for different modulation strategies. Relatively fast voltage balancing dynamics rate provided by modified levelshifted carrier-based PWM for zero voltage command makes it possible to implement simple flying capacitors self-precharge procedure at power-up.

Renewable energy is being spotlighted as the electric power generating source for the next generation. Due to an increase in renewable energy systems in the grid system, their impact on the grid has become non-negligible. Thus, many countries in the world, including Europe, present their own grid codes for grid power conversion devices. In order to experiment with these grid codes, grid fault test equipment is required. This paper proposes both equipment and a control method, which are constructed with a 7-level cascaded H-bridge converter, that are capable of generating various grid faults. In addition, the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method for multilevel converters is compared and analyzed. The proposed structure, the control method, and the PWM method are verified through simulation and experimental results.

This letter proposes a new implementation of phase-disposition pulse-width modulation (PD-PWM) for multilevel flying capacitor (FC) converters using a single triangular carrier. The proposed implementation is much simpler than conventional PD-PWM techniques based on multiple trapezoidal shaped carriers, generates the same results as far as natural capacitor voltage balance is concerned and offers better quality line-to-line voltages when compared to phase-shifted PWM. The proposed algorithm is based on re-shaping the reference signal to fit within the range of a single carrier and assigning each crossing of the reference signal with the carrier to a particular pair of switches at any time. The proposed algorithm is suitable for digital implementation taking maximum benefit from the PWM units available in the processor. Simulation and experimental results are presented from the five-level FC Converter to verify the proposed PD-PWM implementation.
