Background: Complementary and alternative medicine is a non-conventional therapy and includes a wide range of medical treatments in different countries. This study was done to evaluate alternative medicine complaints lodged to the Tehran Forensic Medicine Organization from 2011-2017.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all documented complaints of complementary medicine lodged to the Tehran Forensic Medicine Organization from 2011-2017 were reviewed and assessed with retrospective follow-up. The inclusion criterion was complaints from complementary and alternative medicine, and the exclusion criterion was incomplete data. The study data included patients’ demographic data, the therapist, the specialty of the therapist, type of disease, treatment method, adverse effects, the initial and final decision by the commission, and the amount of medical error. This information was extracted from the existing documents and recoded in the checklists.Results: Medical errors were found in 53.4% of the complaints examined. The most common cause of complaint (63%) was the adverse effects, of which the most common ones were phytotherapy (45.2%) and cupping (Hijama) (20.5%). The error was significantly different between physician and non-physician healers (P=0.001).Conclusion: Based on this study, among the alternative medicine complaints lodged to the Tehran Forensic Medicine Organization from 2011-2017, the adverse effects were the main problem of complementary therapies confirmed in more than half of the complaints.

The aim of this study is to determine the perspectives of anaesthesia physicians on traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) practices, their personal experiences, the training they have received and the professional application areas of these practices. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was sent by email to the faculty members, specialists and assistant doctors who can be reached and work in the field of anaesthesia in Turkey. In the research, in addition to the demographic characteristics and the questions regarding the perspective on TCM practice, its reliability and its clinical use, 24 questions about these individuals' perspective on graduate education, the training they have received, their scientific publications and the need for prospective publications were asked. Results: Four hundred and sixtytwo participants were included in the study. 75.3% of the anaesthesiologists did not use TCM methods we questioned. 61.3% of the participants were women. The most commonly applied (12%), most widely known (71.9%), most trusted (72.9%) and most trained (17%) TCM method was acupuncture. 75.4% of the participants were willing to use at least one TCM method in their profession. Chronic pain and anxiety were noted as the most common known indications (67.5% and 62.6% respectively). 53.9% of the participants were in favour of graduate education. Conclusion: Most of the anesthesiologists in Turkey are leaning towards the use of traditional and complementary medicine in their profession. We believe that the traditional and complementary medicine practices will increase when the appropriate clinical setting is provided.
