A Surface Plasmon Resonance Biochip That Operates Both in the Angular and Wavelength Interrogation Modes

Abstract: This paper presents a surface plasmon resonance system based on a polymer prism chip. The device allows operation in both the angular and wavelength interrogation modes. The biochip design is discussed emphasizing the effect of the ambient temperature over the optical behavior. Birefringence effect, biochip polishing, and responsivity are also reported. The basic mathematical formulation for both operating modes is discussed, and morphological parameters are considered in the data analysis. Experimental sensor… Show more

“…To minimize this effect, the biochip prisms have heated until relaxation stress temperature, about 250°C for 24 hours, and controllably cooled to room temperature, in a process called annealing. The biochips without proper annealing do not exhibit the typical SPR resonance dip (Oliveira et al, 2013;Oliveira et al, 2014a). Also, the prism polishing improves the device performance by emphasizing the resonance dip and reducing transmission losses.…”

“…Such combinations aim at reducing the final cost of the sensor and also increase the number of possible operating points (OP), i.e., the pair for both the AIM and WIM modes (Oliveira et al, 2013;Oliveira et al, 2014b). Recently, palladium and other metals have been used to provide good characteristics for biological and industrial applications (Zuppella et al, 2015).…”

“…D URING the last decade, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have been widely applied in chemical research [1] and biosensing [2]. SPR generally refers to the coupling between the electromagnetic wave and the surface plasmon wave (SPW), on the interface between a metal and a dielectric medium, and this coupling causes a decrease in the reflected intensity.…”
