A Study on the Reliability of Sasang Constitutional Body Trunk Measurement

Abstract: Objective. Body trunk measurement for human plays an important diagnostic role not only in conventional medicine but also in Sasang constitutional medicine (SCM). The Sasang constitutional body trunk measurement (SCBTM) consists of the 5-widths and the 8-circumferences which are standard locations currently employed in the SCM society. This study suggests to what extent a comprehensive training can improve the reliability of the SCBTM. Methods. We recruited 10 male subjects and 5 male observers with no experie… Show more

“…The axillary, chest, rib, and waist circumferences were used in analysis as trunk circumferences for comparing other body circumferences. According to the theory that each body circumference differs depending on the Sasang type, the eight-part body circumference measurements are used to diagnose the Sasang type 11, 12. The measurements were performed according to the standard protocols provided in Table 2.…”

“…We calculated BMI and the ratios between pairs of circumferences because these measurements have been used in many medical and epidemiological studies. The exact positions for the measurements of the human body and various indices used to calculate ratios are described in the references [1922]. All of the indices assessed in this study are listed and briefly described in Table 1.…”
