A study of the practice of dermatology in the United States. Initial findings

Abstract: A nationwide study of the practice activities of dermatologists reports that dermatology is a predominantly outpatient specialty, with 97% of patient encounter occurring outside of the hospital. The average dermatologist cares for approximately 7,000 patients a year and functions almost exclusively as a specialist, with only 2.2% of his cases related to nondermatologic problems. The dermatologist performs a type of primary care, however, with seven out of ten patients being self-referred. Eighty-seven percent … Show more

“…A similar incidence (4-7%) was reported by Christophersen from Denmark 3 and Mendenhall et al from USA. 4 In our study, Hand and Foot Dermatitis accounted for 33.5% of the ACD cases and 1.64% of the total outpatient In our study, more number of positive patch test reactions were seen in the male (69.70%) compared to females (35.29%). The study by Gurmohan Singh and K.K.…”

“…Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder. The prevalence of ACD varies in different parts of the world, 1 - 3 with prevalence rates of 1.5-5.4% in the US, and up to 28% in Spain. 4 , 5 Several factors such as the type of the allergen, duration of exposure, region, age, gender, and race have been implicated in the induction of ACD and may contribute to differences in prevalence rates.…”

“…Recent studies suggest that allergic contact dermatitis remains more common in adults than in children (Kwangsukstith & Maibach, 1995) affecting approximately 10% of the adult population (Marks, 1997) and accounting for just over 4% of all dermatologic consultations (Mendenhall et al, 1973). Though the condition is increasingly being recognized in the pediatric population, most epidemiologic studies have been completed retrospectively and investigate the occurrence of positive patch tests in symptomatic patients only.…”
