A study in the cognition of individuals’ identity: Solving the problem of singular cognition in object and agent tracking

Abstract: This article compares the ability to track individuals lacking mental states with the ability to track intentional agents. It explains why reference to individuals raises the problem of explaining how cognitive agents track unique individuals and in what sense reference is based on procedures of perceptual-motor and epistemic tracking. We suggest applying the notion of singular-files from theories in perception and semantics to the problem of tracking intentional agents. In order to elucidate the nature of age… Show more

“…A distinção entre o rastreamento puramente perceptual e motor e o rastreamento epistêmico está na forma como eles são realizados: no primeiro caso, o mesmo se dá pelo acompanhamento direto do agente através do emprego de um sistema sensório-motor; no segundo, em virtude do agente não poder ser rastreado por métodos puramente perceptivos, faz-se necessário o uso de informações indiretas a respeito do mesmo, como a reflexão e a memória (Bullot & Rysiew, 2007).…”

“…From these characteristics, one can conclude that a system performing perceptual-demonstrative identification has to solve computational problems related to the cognitive tracking of token individuals. Typically, the system has to keep the informational link with an individual target while dynamically and incrementally updating a singular representation of the target (Bullot & Rysiew, 2007;Dretske, 1969Dretske, , 1981Evans, 1982;Pylyshyn, 2001, pp. 129-131).…”

“…The integrated tracking of individuals is therefore dependent on flexible interplay of sensory-motor and various epistemic forms of tracking and reference (Bullot, 2006;Bullot & Rysiew, 2007). Epistemic tracking refers here to cases in which the target individual cannot be perceived (hence, cannot be perceptually tracked because it has left the sensory fields) but can be identified and/or located by the tracker on the basis of indirect information gathered by such sources as memory, reasoning or communication.…”
