Abstract: The first single chain magnet (SCM) based on the orbitally degenerate [Os(CN)6]3− anion was prepared. The high energy barriers are a result of interplay of Mn3+ single-ion magnetic anisotropy and highly anisotropic three axes exchange interactions between the paramagnetic centres.

“…X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations showed that 1-Mn, 1-Fe, and 1-Ni are isotypic to Co(NCS) 2 (4-Acpy) 2 (H 2 O) 2 and that 2-Ni is isotypic to Co(NCS) 2 (4-Acpy) 4 , both of which were reported recently ( Figure S7 and S8). [67,77] The compound 3-Ni/I seems to be isotypic to the more stable form of Co(NCS) 2 (4-Acpy) 2 , in which the Co cations are linked by the anions into layers (Figure S9).…”

“…Additional hydrogen bonding between the H atoms of the uncoordinated water molecules and the acetyl O atom as well as the thiocyanate S atom link the building blocks into a three-dimensional network ( Figure 2 and Table S4). Crystal Structure of Ni(NCS) 2 (4-Acpy) 4 Compound 2-Ni crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with eight formula units in the unit cell and is isotypic to Co(NCS) 2 (4-Acpy) 4 reported recently. [67] The asymmetric unit consists of one nickel(II) cation, two thiocyanato anions, and four 4-acetylpyridine anions, all in general positions.…”

“…Previously, we have studied heterometallic assemblies involving Mn III SB complexes and cyanometallates of 3d [15,21], 4d [22], and 5d [14,23,24] [21,22]. A neutral 3D framework was not obtained due to non-bridging character of nitrosyl and only double negative charge of the metalloligand, as the formation of a 3D system is possible only in the case of the skeleton neutrality requiring three {Mn III SB} + and one [M(CN) 6+n ] 3− .…”

“…Inspired by a synthetic approach used in Ref. [25], we were able to synthesize the two anionic chain polymers involving paramagnetic octahedral hexacyanocomplexes as metalloligands, {(Ph 4 P) 2 [Mn(acacen)M(CN) 6 ]} n , M = Fe III , Os III being single-chain magnets (SCMs) below 2.5 and 2.8 K, respectively [15,23]. However, all attempts to prepare low-dimensional (LD) assemblies incorporating [Mn(acacen)] + and pentagonal bipyramidal (PB) geometry [Re(CN) 7 ] 3− failed.…”

“…Almost 300 years later this compound, the mixed iron cyanide Fe III 4 [Fe II (CN) 6 ] 3 ·xH 2 O, named Prussian Blue became a focus of one of the most developed and extensively studied fields of coordination chemistry [4,5]. Cyanide-based compounds were found to act as photoswitchable magnetic solids [6][7][8][9][10], antidotes for radioactive poisoning [11], molecular sieves [12], hydrogen storage materials [13,14], high-temperature molecular magnets [15][16][17] and low-dimensional nanomagnets [18][19][20][21][22].…”
