A Set-Theoretic Method for Verifying Feasibility of a Fast Explicit Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller

Abstract: In this chapter an algorithm for nonlinear explicit model predictive control is presented. A low complexity receding horizon control law is obtained by approximating the optimal control law using multiscale basis function approximation. Simultaneously, feasibility and stability of the approximate control law is ensured through the computation of a capture basin (region of attraction) for the closed-loop system. In a previous work, interval methods were used to construct the capture basin (feasible region), yet… Show more

“…Obviously, as in nonlinear tube-based MPC theory, the evaluation of sets G i and H i can be very challenging. Estimates of these sets can be obtained using methods of reachability analysis for nonlinear systems, as those discussed in [28]. Therefore, since we want to stabilize the nominal subsystems (4) and to guarantee satisfaction of tightened state constraints, we need to solve online the following local MPC problem…”

“…Obviously, as in nonlinear tubebased MPC theory, the most difficult step is the evaluation of sets G i . Estimates of these sets can be obtained using methods of reachability analysis for nonlinear systems, as those discussed in [20] and [22]. Note also that (6a) allows to satisfy state constraints irrespectively of the errors on state measurements.…”

“…Notice that the second part of this Assumption is needed in order to guarantee that the approximation error of the method does not depend on the sets Ψ i . For more details, the reader is referred to[20].…”
