A self-adaptive cell-ID positioning system based on visible light communications in underground mines

Abstract: International audienceThe Cell-ID positioning technique is usually implemented on cellular networks to locate mobile phones according to the cell identification code forwarded by the Base Transceiver Station (BTS). The user is then assumed to be located at the same coordinate position as the BTS. However, this simple positioning method, also used in indoor location systems with WiFi or RFID technologies, suffers from a lack of accuracy due to the size and the density of cells. In this paper we propose an indoo… Show more

“…On the other hand, by leveraging illumination infrastructures, it was possible to develop a cost effective and accurate underground positioning system. The research [119] proposed a 1-D VLC-based positioning system where an OOK modulation was adopted to represent a LED lamp's ID. The signals were received by PD, whose position was estimated using the proximity algorithm.…”

“…Only one node position is tested and studies about the error distribution are not carried out. In [17] a cell ID VLC positioning system for underground mines is proposed. Using the proposed method different levels of accuracy can be obtained depending on the coverage area of each cell and the separation between each other.…”
