A school‐based fluoride mouth rinsing programme in Sarawak: a 3‐year field study

Abstract: The findings show that a school-based weekly 0.2% sodium fluoride mouth rinsing programme is an effective caries preventive measure and should be implemented in fluoride-deficient areas as a means of reducing the prevalence of dental caries in these communities.

“…An important landmark in the history of dentistry is the discovery of the anticariogenic properties of fluoride [21]. Substantial evidence is there in the literature that validated the effectiveness of fluoride mouth rinses on dental caries among schoolchildren [2228]. Herbs with medicinal properties are a useful and effective source for treatment of various disease processes.…”

“…In the WF-ceased area, one school carried out a fluoride mouth-rinsing program (0.2% fluoride solution, once a week) from March 2008 to date of this study, while another school in the same area carried out the same program from March 2009 to date of this study. Generally, fluoride mouth-rinsing program was conducted in class once a week for [35][36][37][38][39][40] weeks per year (due to vacations and examinations). The fluoride mouth-rinsing program was not carried out in either school in the non-WF area.…”

“…On a national scale, to give just one example, all Thai schoolchildren brush their teeth with a fluoride-containing toothpaste every day in school. Although there are inherent advantages for total oral care of toothbrushing over mouthrinsing, mouthrinse programmes are cheaper than brushing programmes and thus favoured in some community programmes (39,40). There is no doubt that the development, marketing and use of fluoride-containing toothpastes have been a great success story in improving the oral health of thousands of millions of people throughout the world.…”
