A review of the Zoogonidae (Digenea: Microphalloidea) from fishes of the waters around New Caledonia, with the description ofOverstreetia cribbin. sp.

Abstract: New and published reports of zoogonid digeneans from New Caledonian waters are recorded, including a description of Overstreetia cribbi n. sp. from Atherinomorus lacunosus. This species differs from its congeners in the detail of its circum-oral spination and some metrical features. Other new records are of: Diphterostomum plectorhynchi Machida, Kamegai & Kuramochi, 2006 in Diagramma pictum; Parvipyrum acanthuri (Pritchard, 1963) in Acanthurus dussumieri; Zoogonoides viviparus (Olsson, 1868) in Lagocephalus sc… Show more

“…The Zoogonidae that was found closely related and probably paraphyletic to the Faustudidae is placed in the second clade. Thus, the second clade includes the Zoogonidae + Faustulidae as the most basal taxon with other taxa (Lecithodendriidae, Microphallidae, Pleurogenidae and Prosthogonimidae) as progressively more derived (see Olson et al, 2003;Bray and Justine, 2014).…”

“…According to a recent review (Bray and Justine, 2014), this family contains 33 genera with a total of 159 species. Its placement as a microphalloidean has been demonstrated in several molecular analyses.…”

“…Gymnocranius euanus has been thoroughly examined for parasites in New Caledonia, with 23 host-parasite combinations reported in 2010 [11]. Additional records since include digeneans [4], copepods [8] and larval anisakids [25]. The description of the present new species exemplifies again the high biodiversity of parasites in coral fish.…”

“…Originally discussed in detail by Bray (1987), and Bray & Justine (2014), two subfamilies are recognised within the Zoogonidae, the Zoogoninae and the Lepidophyllinae. The key difference between the two is that the Zoogoninae possesses a reduced vitellarium, whereas the Lepidophyllinae possess paired fields of well-developed follicles (Bray, 2002).…”
