The incident of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) incursion into aerodrome often happens due to the popularity of drones among amateurs, and this may lead to a threat to the safety of commercial aircraft operation. Hence, it is essential to estimate the damage level of commercial aircraft caused by drone strikes. From the data analysis of bird strike accidents over the period 1990-2019, it is found that the engine part is more susceptible to be damaged by bird strikes compared to the other aircraft parts. In this paper, the damage of engine fan blades caused by the drone ingestion is simulated by using a drone (MAVIC Pro) impinging onto a typical business engine (CFM56-5B) with the aid of FEM (finite element method). It is demonstrated that the collision position and collision posture both would affect the damage level of engine fan blades significantly. More damage to fan blades can be detected for the 75% collision position, and the complex collision posture would lead to much larger damage on the engine fan blades. The results presented in this work can be used to guide the decision made on the drone incursion incidents over the aerodrome.

Bird strikes are one of the biggest threats to flight safety in aviation. Bird strikes occur in every 2000 flights. 90% of foreign body damage in aviation is caused by bird strikes. In the event of a bird strike, the most critical parts of the aircraft are the nose, windshield, engine, inlet, wing front edges. Bird strikes usu-ally occur during the landing and take-off moments of the aircraft. In addition, factors such as the increase in the number of flights in the globalizing world and the migration status of birds play a role in the increase of these cases. In 15% of bird strikes, the aircraft is seriously damaged. Aircraft components must have a certain durability to minimize damage for flight safety. Criteria for critical parts are set in aviation regulations. To meet these criteria, aircraft components must successfully complete bird strike certification tests prior to flight. Due to the cost of physical tests, analyzes based on numerical simulations are carried out in par-allel with certification tests. The purpose of this analysis is to predict the damage to the aircraft by the verified bird model, to make changes to the aircraft compo-nent design and material when necessary, and to reduce the cost. In this review, the theoretical background of the bird strike problem, finite element analysis (model bird materials, bird modeling methods, bird geometry) and tests in the relevant literature will be discussed.

The strike between flying birds and airplanes results in the unacceptable losses of aircraft structures. The normal approach to evaluate the bird impact resistance is the combined full-scale experimental-numerical study. However, the simulation results from the current available bird constitutive models are usually not in good agreement with the experimental data. Establishing a reasonable bird constitutive model is difficult and significant to the simulation of the bird striking process. In this paper, based on the displacement measurements of an aluminum plate subjected to soft body impact, an inversion of the bird constitutive model is conducted by using backpropagation (BP) neural network. A comparative evaluation of this inversion model and other constitutive models is carried out, indicating that the proposed inversion model is more reasonable.
