A review of methods for condition monitoring, surveys and statistical analyses of disconnectors and circuit breakers

Abstract: Abstract-There is a need for a new survey of conditionmonitoring methods for circuit breakers and disconnectors, since during the last two decades less than ten surveys have been carried out. The paper presents several statistical surveys and analyses. The methods of condition monitoring found are reviewed and classified according to the different types of failure identified in the surveys. Some research gaps are identified, such as the prediction of the degradation of the contacts, the signal processing of co… Show more

“…As pointed out recently in [23], the ability to predict the ageing of circuit breakers is not fully developed, as they do not have a clearly defined physicsof-failure equation model. To the best of authors' knowledge, only previous results in [24] indicate that it is possible to establish a data-driven prognostics model to predict the RUL from SF 6 density data samples.…”

“…An acoustic signal processing based on blindsource separation through fast independent component analysis has been discussed in (Zhao & Cheng, 2014) while acoustic signal processing based on wavelet transform has been presented by (CHARBKAEW, 2012;Mingliang & Keqi, 2014). A comprehensive survey of the testing methodologies used by power engineers for analyzing CBs and disconnectors in the last decade has been reviewed by (Westerlund & Hilber, 2014). A PhD thesis has been presented in Adelaide University by analyzing the vibro-acoustics of transformers and their application in the condition monitoring of power transformers (Wang, Eng, & Eng, 2015).…”

“…The interested readers are referred to [27] for more detailed information on the algorithms and procedures. There are several other methodologies in the literature that can be employed individually or collectively for assessing the CB reliability [28]. The failure probability index employed in this paper can be dynamically updated as and when new monitoring data arrive, providing a continuous quantitative measure of CB reliability over time.…”
