A review of fatigue and fracture mechanics with a focus on rubber-based materials

Abstract: Prediction of how cracks nucleate and develop is a major concern in fracture mechanics. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the state of the art on fracture mechanics with primary focus on different methodologies available for crack initiation and growth prediction in rubber-based materials under the static and fatigue loading conditions. The concept of fracture mechanics applied to rubber-based materials and concern of finite element analysis for J-integral estimation in elastomers are disc… Show more

“…It has been mentioned earlier that the CTOD is considered 0.1 mm as crack initiation. Also, the corresponding J value is J IC , which is the critical energy per unit required to propagate the crack [15].…”

“…The use of full-field optical techniques to measure materials' displacement and surface deformation has recently increased significantly. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a measurement technique widely used in experimental mechanics because its advantages include non-contact, fullarea optical measurement, high sensitivity, no special environmental requirements, and easy handling [12][13][14][15]. In this method, the deformation carrier is the tracking speckle patterns sprayed on the material surface or the area of interest.…”

“…However, rubber material is a typical nonlinear visco‐elastic material. Research on fatigue reliability remains inchoate compared with the perfect fatigue theory of metal materials; thus, fatigue prediction theory of rubber materials has much room for development . Therefore, in‐depth study of fatigue life prediction theory for vibration‐isolating rubber has vital theoretical significance and practical engineering value.…”

“…It is critical to identify the root causes of failure modes in structures to improve their performance. 13 Over-deflection, high speed, high ambient and pavement temperatures, road hazard, ozone deterioration, and improper tire maintenance are some of the possible contributors to belt separation phenomenon in tires. 4 Beads may uncommonly break due to some reasons including mismatch of tire and the wheel, shipping damage to the bead area, and using beads with insufficient strength and incorrect wire diameters.…”
