A review: high power density motors for electric vehicles

Abstract: The review of High Power Density Motor (HPDM) is presented, the high power density refers to ratio of output power to volume of the motor. As a result even a small envelope motor can have high power output. HPDM are also known as low speed high torque motors. The HPDM are compact, lightweight, has high torque and less cogging torque, finding application in automotive field, especially in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. This paper analyses the design, performance and efficiency of various HPDM. Comparati… Show more

“…There are various types of electric motors available on the market, but due to the reliability and high specific power values, the best choice is the high power density brushless motor. The power-toweight ratio of the selected type of electric motor is [16]: PWR e = 2.68 kW kg (9) The power-to-weight ratio of the turboprop engine was calculated with the use of generally available data concerning the turboprop engines available on the market. It is: (10) For the calculation purposes, it was assumed that the speed of the aircraft will be V = 270 km/h, and the flight distance s = 80 km.…”

“…Various designs to improve this characteristic in different motors is discussed in the paper [35]. One can notice that motor power density has reached 0.5 kW/kg to 2 kW/kg for hybrid electric vehicle applications [36]. The paper [37] presents a solution to improve the power density of electric motors used in electric or hybrid cars using a dual motor with a planetary transmission system.…”

“…In contrast, BLDCs are a more preferred choice for operations at low speeds. Nonetheless, there is a need for more research and development to enhance the efficiency of IMs at low speed so that they can become the most effective choice for use in EVs [25] as shown in figure 12.…”
