A Review: Different Extraction Techniques of Pectin

Abstract: Pectin is recently investigated for different applications in food industry, medicinal and pharmaceutical field. Extraction of pectin using different techniques have become a great challenge and yet to be discovered. Recent studies involving extraction of pectin using acids, microwave assisted and enzymes are reviewed, with the aim to capture the state of art on current research about pectin extraction. Extraction techniques have been discussed in related to different acids and enzymes.

“…Despite extensive efforts, no commercial scale chemical production of uronic acids or uronic acid derivatives exists at present . Several methods have been investigated to replace the use of strong acids for pectin extraction from different biomasses . Substantial progress has been made in the purification of UA from hydrolysis mixtures.…”

“…[3] Several methods have been investigated to replace the use of strong acids for pectin extraction from different biomasses. [5] Substantial progress has been made in the purification of UA from hydrolysis mixtures. Càrdenas-Fernàndez et al reported the application of centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) for simultaneous separation of all the pectin derived monosaccharides.…”

“…At the industrial scale, acid extraction is the most preferred pectin isolation method. Acidic extraction agents such as strongly mineral acids could easily penetrate the insoluble layer of the plant's cell wall and thus facilitate the extraction of pectin [8]. However, special treatments are required for the extracted product to be considered GRAS (generally recognised as safe) [26].…”

“…Commercial pectin is produced using the solvent extraction, enzymatic extraction and acid extraction technique, although the latter is the most preferred at industrial scale [8]. Acids are highly effective in solubilising and stabilising the pectin that is tightly bound in the cell wall, making them the most effective extracting agents.…”
