An Indo-Pacific scleractinian coral has invaded the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM): Tubastraea micranthus. It was initially observed on one oil platform (GI-93C) near the Mississippi River. Here, we determined whether its populations were spreading and whether there was evidence of rapid expansion. We compared population density data of T. micranthus with those from T. coccinea, a congener which invaded the western Atlantic earlier. Fourteen oil/gas platforms were assessed down to 138 m depth using remotely operated vehicle digital video. Colony densities in numbers m −2 were determined for both species, and colony size was measured for T. micranthus. Data were analyzed by platform and for geographic distribution. T. micranthus densities were highest on GI-93C and on GI-116A, SW of the Mississippi River, being significantly higher than on other platforms. Densities declined radially from there. Mean colony size was highest on MC-311A, with colonies generally being >100 cm 2 . This platform is situated at the head of the Mississippi Canyon and may have been the original site of colonization. It also receives blue water instead of turbid, lower salinity water, and this species may grow better under those conditions. T. micranthus size frequency distributions were generally skewed towards 1-200 cm 2 (5 cm diameter) (sometimes > 90% of the population), suggesting that most populations are potentially in an expanding growth phase. T. coccinea densities were high (range: ~50 to 300 colonies m −2 ). Its populations were also centered SW of the Mississippi River. T. micranthus is spreading through this region, and the window for its potential eradication may be closing.

This comprehensive taxonomic work is the result of the study of fan worms (Sabellidae, Annelida) collected over the last 40 years from around the Lizard Island Archipelago, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Some species described herein are commonly found in Lizard Island waters but had not previously been formally reported in the literature. Most species appear to be not particularly abundant, and few specimens have been collected despite the sampling effort in the area over this time period. After this study, the overall sabellid diversity of the archipelago has been greatly increased (by more than 650%). Before this revision, only four sabellid species had been recorded for Lizard Island, and in this paper we report 31 species, 13 of which belong to nominal species, six are formally described as new species (Euchone danieloi n. sp., Euchone glennoi n. sp., Jasmineira gustavoi n. sp., Megalomma jubata n. sp., Myxicola nana n. sp., and Paradialychone ambigua n. sp.), and the identity of 12 species is still unknown (those referred as cf. or sp.). Two species are newly recorded in Australia and two in Queensland. The invasive species Branchiomma bairdi is reported for the first time at Lizard Island. The genus Paradialychone is reported for Australia for the first time. Standardised descriptions, general photographs of live and/or preserved specimens and distribution data are provided for all species. New species descriptions are accompanied by detailed illustrations and exhaustive morphological information. A dichotomous key for sabellid identification is also included.

RESUMENEl listado más reciente de poliquetos de Chile fue publicado en 1985. Desde entonces, se han efectuado una serie de contribuciones sistemáticas de la familia Sabellidae, lo que ha ocasionado cambios en el estado taxonómico de varios géneros y especies. Este trabajo proporciona nuevos nombres, sinónimos y nuevos registros, así como una lista de los sabélidos nombrados por el Prof. Ernst Ehlers. Se enlistan 13 géneros y 23 especies para Chile. Fabriciinae está representada por una especie y Sabellinae por 12 géneros y 22 especies. Tres especies que fueron descritas originalmente para Chile actualmente no se consideran válidas, mientras que siete registros permanecen como cuestionables hasta que una revisión garantice su distribución. El Prof. Ehlers estableció el género Potamis y 24 especies de sabélidos para diversas localidades del mundo. Entre esas especies, 17 se consideran válidas, dos insertae sedis y cinco han sido sinonimizadas, mientras que el género Potamis fue reemplazado con Potamethus. Se incluye una clave ilustrada para los géneros de Sabellinae.Palabras clave: Sabellidae, Chile, Ehlers, listado, gusanos plumero, clave. ABSTRACTThe most recent checklist of polychaetes of Chile dates from 1985. Since then systematic contributions for the family Sabellidae have been published resulting in changes in the taxonomic status of various genera and species. This contribution provides new names, synonymies and new records. A list of sabellid taxa named by Prof. Ernst Ehlers is also included. Thirteen genera and 23 species are listed for Chile. Fabriciinae is represented by one species and Sabellinae with 12 genera and 22 species. Three species that were originally described from Chile are currently recognised as not valid, and seven records as questionable until any revision sustains their distribution. Prof. Ehlers established 24 species of sabellid worms from several worldwide localities and the genus Potamis. Among these species, 17 are currently accepted names, two are insertae sedis and five have been synonymized, while the genus name Potamis was replaced with Potamethus. An illustrated key is included for the genera of Sabellinae.
