A randomized trial comparing two interventions to increase physical activity among patients undergoing bariatric surgery

Abstract: Objective: To test the effectiveness of two levels of physical activity interventions before and up to 6 1 = 2 months after bariatric surgery. Methods: Before surgery, individuals completed submaximal exercise testing on a treadmill. After random assignment to standard care, pedometer use, or exercise counseling plus pedometer, participants wore an accelerometer for approximately 2 weeks and returned it to the bariatric center before surgery and 2, 4, and 6 months postoperatively. Results: Individuals in exerc… Show more

“…The decrease in RMR due to weight loss, either with or without the exercise, is consistent with a large body of literature , which could explain some of the decrease in TDEE, as RMR is a main component of TDEE. Both intervention groups had similar reductions in sedentary time, and changes in sedentary behavior did not seem to confound the intervention effects on PA or estimated EE, as reported in a recent study .…”

“…There was a wide range, however, in reported exercise, and not all exercise sessions were supervised. Moreover, subjects in both diet and bariatric surgery weight loss programs often increase their PA outside the confines of a structured exercise session or PA counseling . Ours is the first study to assess whether an exercise program might affect other components of PA in patients post bariatric surgery, which has limited other investigations lacking objective measurements of PA and EE and which could confound the effects of exercise training.…”

“…Four interventions (n = 6 publications) delivered lifestyle and nutrition counselling‐focused MDT support, four interventions (n = 7 publications) delivered psychology‐focused MDT support, and 10 interventions (n = 21 publications) delivered exercise‐focused MDT support (Table ). There were five interventions delivered preoperatively, 10 post‐operatively, and three preoperatively and post‐operatively (Table ; detailed characteristics in Table S2). Of the post‐operative interventions, seven were concluded within the first 6‐month post‐operative, and six extended beyond or commenced after 6‐month post‐operative …”

“…The use of a pedometer reduction [14] and the use of a pedometer has been shown to increase physical activity by 26.9 percent [16][17][18]. Possibly, the pedometer increases the motivation to exercise, and leads to healthy changes in daily routines [19].…”
