Abstract: BackgroundPreterm birth is the main cause of morbidity and mortality during the perinatal period. Classical risk factors are held responsible for only 1/3 of preterm births and no current intervention has produced an appreciable reduction of this event. It is necessary to explore new hypotheses and mechanisms of causality by using an integrated approach, collaboration among research groups and less fragmented theoretical-methodological approaches in order to detect new risk factors and to formulate more effect… Show more

“…Firstly, it should be noted that the sample size was originally not computed for alcohol consumption, 16 and therefore a type 1 error cannot be ruled out. However, we think that the minimal differences between the estimated and observed sample size would not modify the results.…”

“…It is being thought that severe military conflicts in Africa shorten the expected lifetime for more than 2 years. In general, WHO had calculated that 269 thousand people had died in 1999 due to the effect of wars and that loss of 8.44 million healthy years of life had occurred (2,3). Wars negatively affect the provision of health services.…”

“…This study is part of the study "BRISA" (Brazilian Ribeirão Preto and São Luis Prenatal Cohort) [33]. As proposed in the original project, pregnant volunteers were invited to fill up questionnaires, period are highly prevalent, affecting 10-15% of postpartum women in Western Europe and North America, and up to 40% of postpartum women in developing regions of the globe, which suggests a probable involvement of environmental factors in the occurrence of PPD [4].…”

“…From the assessments performed during pregnancy in the original project [33], we included, in this study, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D) [35,36] and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) [37,38] to measure, respectively, the occurrence of depressive symptoms and the perception of stress by mothers during pregnancy.…”
