Surveys of patterns of genetic variation in natural sympatric and allopatric populations of recently diverged species are necessary to understand the processes driving intra and interspecific diversification. The South American moths Cactoblastis cactorum, Cactoblastis doddi and Cactoblastis bucyrus are specialized in the use of cacti as host plants. These species have different distribution ranges and differ in patterns of host plant use. However, there are areas in which their ranges overlap, as in northwestern Argentina, where they are largely sympatric. Using a combination of genome-wide SNPs and mitochondrial data we investigated the phylogeographic patterns of these cactophilic moths and searched for footprints of hybridization. Additionally, we evaluated a moth population feeding on Cleistocactus baumannii, a plant never reported as a host for the genus. We identified three well delimited species and detected signs of historical gene flow. Our survey also revealed intraspecific geographic structure in both C. doddi and C. cactorum and showed that the moth population feeding on C. baumannii may be considered as conspecific to C. bucyrus. Overall, our results indicated historical events of genetic interchange occurred in Cactoblastis cactophagous moths, but host plants likely played an important role during divergence limiting gene flow across species.

We also searched for genetic footprints of hybridization between species. We identified three well delimited species and detected signs of hybridization in the area of sympatry. Our results supported a hypothetical scenario of allopatric speciation in the generalist C. cactorum and genetic interchange during secondary geographic contact with the pair of specialists C. bucyrus and C. doddi that probably speciated sympatrically. In both cases, adaptation to new host plants probably played an important role in speciation. The results also suggested the interplay of geography and host plant use as drivers of divergence and limiting gene flow at intra and interspecific levels.

The saguaro is an endemic and emblematic columnar cactus of the Sonoran Desert that offers refuge and food to different species. Climate change and increased ultraviolet exposure are threatening this species. Although reports of an increase in “epidermal browning” in saguaro populations in the United States have been published, to the best of our knowledge, no studies of this or other types of damage to Mexican saguaro populations are available. The present research is the first report of its kind performed in a saguaro population in the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve (Sonora, Mexico). Seven types of damage were evaluated and classified in saguaro stems: cactus cortical scaling (CCS = epidermal browning), girdling, shell, exposed root, eyelet, termite tubes, and topping cuts. In addition, an anatomical comparison of healthy and CCS‐damaged tissues is presented. Shell was the most frequent type of damage (91% of individuals), followed by CCS (73%). Girdling occurred mainly in small organisms. Shell, exposed root, eyelet, and termite tubes tended to occur more frequently in larger organisms, whereas CCS tended to be more evenly distributed among differently sized individuals. Of all individuals, 3.3% were undamaged, 89.2% were moderately damaged, and 7.5% were highly damaged. CCS damage causes differences in the composition of the tissues, as well as in stomata distribution, thus compromising the photosynthetic function of the stem. The snapshot of the state of the individuals provided in the present study highlights the need for longer‐term studies considering the long life cycle of the saguaro to develop conservation strategies.
