Background: Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease associated with significant morbidity, mortality and cost to the community. This study was conducted to evaluate the prescription pattern of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a rural population scenario including different age groups and gender.Methods: It was a prospective observational study carried out at Pulikkal village, Malappuram from January 2018 to June 2018. One hundred and four patients of Type II diabetes mellitus who confirmed to the speciﬁed inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled for the study after taking consent.Results: This study shown that 62.5% of patients were on the age group of 41 to 60 and 96% of these patients were literate. This study shown that mono therapy was observed in 38.46% patients and combination therapy in 61.54% patients and metformin as the predominantly prescribed oral anti diabetic drug both in combination and monotherapy. In the sulfonylureas, glimepiride followed by glipizide were the prominently prescribed drugs. There is also a significant increase in the prescriptions of newer OHAs like thiazolidinedione’s, alpha glucosidase inhibitors and DPP-4 inhibitors.Conclusions: Metformin is the most prescribed anti-diabetic drug in monotherapy. In combination therapy, most frequently prescribed combination was the glimepiride and metformin and followed by metformin+glipizide and glibenclamide and metformin.

Objectives: To assess the drug-related problem among patients with type 2 diabetes at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital Results: In this study, a total of 148 patient medication records were included. More than half, 83(57.4%) were men and the rest 65(42.6%) were women. The mean age of the study participants was 51.26 ± 7.08. Around one third (74.3%) of the participants had urban residency. A total of 127 drug-related problems were identified, of which dosage too low was the most common type of DRP encountered, 46(36.2%), followed by unnecessary drug therapy, 25(19.7%) and ineffective drug therapy, 25(19.7%). 95(64.2%) of the patients had at least one drug-related problem.Among patients with DRP, more than half of them, 59 (62.1%) had a single DRP. Out of the total participants, 85(57.4%) of them were taking one anti-diabetic medication and 63(42.6%) of them dual anti-diabetic medications. Only half of the patients have attained the desired FBG level. There was no patient who had experienced more than two types of drug-related problems at a time. Less than 10% of patients were taking five or more drugs at a time.

Background: This study was aimed to analyze the drug utilization pattern in the management of hypertension in diabetic patients.Methods: A prospective, observational and non interventional study was conducted in 100 diabetic hypertensive patients admitted in medicine wards at Dhiraj Hospital. Patients who signed informed consent form were only included in the study. All the data were recorded from patients’ case files and analyzed.Results: Of enrolled 100 patients, 69 (69%) were male and 31 (31%) were female and maximum number of the patients (42%) were found in the age group of 51-60 years. Out of 100 admitted patients, 75% patients were treated with single antihypertensive agent, 20% were treated with combination of two antihypertensive agents while only 5% were administered more than two antihypertensive agents. As a single antihypertensive agent, most commonly prescribed was ACE inhibitors (32%), Calcium Channel Blockers (23%), Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (12%) and β1 blockers (8%).Conclusions: There was poor awareness among the patients regarding control of hypertension, regular follow up, medication adherence etc. However, two third of diabetic patients had achieved blood pressure target control and ACE inhibitor remained first choice of drug for hypertension in diabetes in this study.
