A Process Model of Scholarly Media Annotation

Abstract: Annotation has been identified as one of the "scholarly primitives", and plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to audio-visual (AV) media in a scholarly context. However, there is a lack of understanding of scholars' annotation needs and behavior. This paper is part of a group of studies aiming to understand how to improve annotation support of AV media, in order to facilitate research activities of media scholars and other scholars who make intensive use of AV media. The main findings confirm previous r… Show more

“…Within the sciences, a common model for dealing with these transitions is to create pipelines of activities that happen in a fixed sequence [17,43]. Our findings, together with earlier work on the research processes in the humanities [11,35,36], show that there are many complex workflows consisting of activities happening in parallel and activities involved in multiple transitions that loop back in expected and unexpected ways. The highly iterative nature of humanities research challenges the pipeline metaphor.…”

“…Thematic and topical aspects are inherent particularly to self-created annotations (cf. Melgar et al, 2017). The exhaustivity or timely coverage of the data, especially in terms of temporal aspects, could be revealed by showing the data in a timeline.…”

“…Interfaces may also offer Personal Results Organization opportunities. Furthermore, especially in a research context, Annotations (j) are used at different points in the process (Melgar et al, 2017). Other tools which may be useful, sometimes only in passive ways are Query History (k) features.…”
