A process model for concurrent conceptual design of space systems

Abstract: This work presents a model of the process of conceptual design studies which use the concurrent engineering approach. Concurrent conceptual design is an integrated system development approach, to rapidly explore feasible design solutions by parallelizing the work of experts. This approach is characterized by a multidisciplinary team of experts collaborating in a co‐located manner. Albeit the conceptual design phase requires creative problem solving, teamwork requires coordination, and would profit from a share… Show more

“…By analyzing big data obtained from DSE later, it is possible to find combinations of design variables for the ADCS statistically that satisfy the required pointing accuracy from the optical camera system. One can use the design structure matrix (DSM) to find whether feedback processes exist [24,25]. The integrated design environment can be developed by using Excel TM if all the system algorithms are developed with the same tool; however, it is recommended to use commercial tools such as Model Center TM [26] or iSight TM [27] because there are frequent cases where other tools such as executables files and routines of MATLAB TM are used.…”

“…Modular subsystems that replace legacy subsystems: requires a modular architecture with sufficient design margin to accommodate the new upgrades With the exception of items (4) and ( 5), each of these types of systems relies on the reuse of existing technology and capability. Knoll, Fortin, and Golkar (2021) identify that complex systems often involve concurrent design and therefore changes in one discipline must be propagated to the other disciplines. Decisions made in one discipline are not isolated events; they impact every other part of the system.…”

“…For paper-ready demonstration, we developed and used a Future Firefighting (FF) model example, rather than the students' project on which we evaluated our implementation. FF systems had been used before to demonstrate MBSE-Conceptual-Design and modeling extensions, 21,23,36,37 and are rather self-explanatory. In our case, the customer needs are to provide an innovative technical solution to firefighting, which can minimize response time to fire events, and the risk to humans.…”

“…In our case, the customer needs are to provide an innovative technical solution to firefighting, which can minimize response time to fire events, and the risk to humans. It encompasses requirements for sensing capability similarly to the FireSAT example, 21 but also situation awareness for ground control, and timely response. It addresses both the firefighting demands and the public needs.…”
