Antagonistic effects of Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. aeruginosa and P. putida were studied against 12 strains of Aeromonas hydrophila (Ah1-Ah12). Four different fractions of cellular component (i.e. whole cell product, heat killed whole cell product, intra cellular product and extra cellular product) of all Pseudomonas species were equally effective in reducing growth of A. hydrophila strains, as measured by the zone of inhibition in an in vitro sensitivity test and have potential action against A. hydrophila infection in fishes. The effects of supplementing diets with levamisole on growth, immune response and resistance against pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila were determined. Fish were assigned to three treatments with different level of levamisole (125, 250 and 500 mg kg¯¹ diet) and the control diet was prepared without levamisole. Cirrhinus mrigala were fed at 4% of their body mass for 60 days. Growth performance, enzyme activities and immunological parameters were analyzed among groups. The total erythrocyte count, total leucocyte count, phagocytic activity and NBT reduction were significantly (P<0.05) enhanced in levamisole treated group when compared to control. The relative percentage survival, A. hydrophila post-challenge was significantly higher in fishes fed on 250 mg kg¯¹ of levamisole supplemented diet. The same dose also resulted in significantly high specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), apparent protein digestibility (APD) and elevated intestinal enzyme activities compared to other groups. Thus, administration of 250 mg of levamisole kg¯¹ diet is recommended for enhancement of immunity, growth and survival of C. mrigala hence acting as a potent immunostimulant agent

This experiment was carried out to investigate the potential probiotics properties of Bacillus subtilis in protecting of juvenile freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii against Aeromonas hydrophila infection. A B. subtilis bacterium isolated from gut of juvenile prawns was added to the prawns feed at 10 8 cells g -1 feed. There were significant differences (P \ 0.05) between B. subtilis-treated and control groups in growth and survival enhancement of juvenile prawns after 60 days of feeding trial. Sixty days after B. subtilis feeding trial, the prawns were challenged by bath exposure to A. hydrophila (10 7 cells mL -1 ) for 28 days. Four weeks after challenge, there was significant difference in the survival of prawns between B. subtilis-treated groups (88.33 %) and control groups (20.81 %; P \ 0.05). In addition, the control groups had an unhealthy external appearance, while the treated groups, appeared healthy and normal. From this, it was concluded that the selected B. subtilis may be a promising probiotics for protection of prawns from A. hydrophila infection.
