A Probe into the Status of global countries’ Trade Positions in the Global Value Chain (GVC) - based on Value Added Trade Perspective and Network Modeling

Abstract: This study is concentrated on measuring the global value chain (GVC) using value added trade based on the network topology of bilateral trade specifically for 62 global economies listed in the WTO-OECD database. Intermediate trade has become the trend in global international trade which has occupied 63% of the total world trade. This study will intuitively observe the status of global countries' positions in the international network. Value added trade has been used for measuring a country's participation in G… Show more

“…(1) Trade openness (OPEN): The transmission mechanism of trade openness influences the upgrading of the global value chain by generating an economies of scale effect, learning effect, and a resource efficiency allocation effect through export trade, which enhances the international division of labor in a country's agriculture, influencing the position of the country's agriculture in the global value chain (Maertens and Swinnen, 2015; Said and Fang, 2019) [38,39]. This paper used the share of a country's (regional) exports of goods and services in its GDP to measure its degree of trade openness.…”

“…Amador et al ( 2018 ) identified the important but distinct role of large economies (Germany, the U.S., China, and Japan) and the cyclical triangular relationships in GVCs. Said and Fang ( 2019 ) found that a few countries concentrate the distribution of global trade but to a declining degree, letting Russia, India, and Saudi Arabia become central. Guan et al ( 2020 ) examined the propagation process of intermediate products and the interdependence from a given GVC sector to its upstream and downstream sectors.…”

“…In the GVC, MNCs excel in core technologies, R&D, conception and design, brands, and marketing channels, and control the high value-added links [7,32]. If developing countries want to increase their value addition in the GVC, they need to continuously develop their capability and actively participate with superior productivity and resources both tangible and intangible, and attract quality investments from MNCs.…”
