A Numerical–Analytical Approach for the Preliminary Design of Thin-Walled Cylindrical Shell Structures with Elliptical Cut-Outs

Abstract: The presence of cut-outs within thin-walled shell structures is unavoidable, holes being needed for the passage of electrical cables, fuel, or just to reduce the weight of the components. Nevertheless, the high stress concentration can lead to a premature collapse of the structure. For this reason, the preliminary design of cylindrical shell structures with holes needs a profound knowledge of the stress distribution for different loading conditions and constraints. In this paper, a parametric study of a fiber-… Show more

“…The problems of contact mechanics on the interaction of rods or shells with their surrounding environment are very popular in such areas as the immersion of construction piles [33,51,52], the design of layered support columns [14], the construction of deep wells [25,59,61], and the elimination of emergency sticking of long drilling tools [34,41]. Attention should also be drawn to a series of theoretical and experimental works devoted to the frictional contact of a deformable aggregate with a cylindrical shell [7,8,42], the interaction of two cylindrical shells with each other [6,18,60], and the contact of an open metal pipe with an elastic body [21,48]. In articles [5,12] the contact interaction of the roller with the bearing ring was studied and the influence of the roller shape on the service life of the bearing was determined.…”

“…The nominal strength of composite material remains the main challenge in most engineering modelling. 15 The specimen size effect curve depicts the relationship between the strength of the open-hole specimen of equal dimensions and the critical crack opening. Composite material has an attractive and competitive role in aerospace, automotive, and marine industries.…”
