A novel tool-path generation method for five-axis flank machining of centrifugal impeller with arbitrary surface blades

Abstract: The centrifugal impeller with arbitrary surface blades is a very important component in automobile, ships, and aircraft industry, and it is one of the most difficult parts to process. Focusing on the machining efficiency improvement, combining the geometric advantages of ruled surface and arbitrary surface, and utilizing the efficient and accurate advantages of flank machining and point machining, this article presents a novel and targeted tool-path generation method and algorithm for five-axis flank machining… Show more

“…As we can see from equations (1)- (7), if all parameters are held fixed (i.e. grinding force, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio), the contact area is just a function of one variable: the radius of curvature of the workpiece.…”

“…5 The current studies focus on the determination of processing interval because of its significant impact on the manufacturing efficiency and quality. 6,7 A large interval can easily lead to an unprocessed region between adjacent paths, and additional path is required, which will cost manufacturing time and decrease efficiency. While a small interval results in overlapping between adjacent paths.…”

“…Moreover, because of the narrow flow channel of the integral impeller and the great variation of blade curvature, it is easy to occur the phenomenon of tool bar collision interference, over-cut or under-cut during CNC machining [10][11][12]. Robotic polishing is to connect the grinding tool or workpiece at its executive end, and complete the part polishing by controlling the robot movement trajectory.…”
