A novel quantitative metric for joint space width: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI)

Abstract: Objective: Joint space width (JSW) has been the gold standard to assess loss of cartilage in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Here we describe a novel quantitative measure of joint space width: standardized JSW (stdJSW). We assess the performance of this quantitative metric for JSW at tracking Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) joint space narrowing grade (JSN) changes and provide reference values for different JSN grades and their annual change. Methods: We collected 18,934 individual knee images … Show more

“…Presymptomatic knee OA diagnosis also remains a big challenge as the radiographic pattern at early OA is insignificant and unnoticeable. Researchers have previously suggested a few advanced quantitative examination approaches, work by extracting diagnostic meaningful structural details [24], such as joint space width [25,26], cartilage thickness [27,28], meniscal thickness [29], and tibiofemoral angle [30], from various images. Although the proposed methods have demonstrated the quantification of joint structures correlated with osteoarthritic joint, the diagnostic precision is not validated.…”

“…This study used a rat osteoarthritis model induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection and medial meniscectomy to test whether the RAPA@Lipo@HMs could alleviate joint wear and reduce osteoarthritic degeneration. Osteoarthritis with progressive cartilage loss and damage usually shows joint space narrowing on an x-ray ( 50 ). As shown in Fig.…”

“…In this study, destructive surgical models of osteoarthritis in rats were established to alter the mechanical stability of knee joints and induce cartilage damage [ 49 ]. On the X-ray plain, osteoarthritic cartilage damage is often characterized by joint space narrowing [ 50 , 51 ]. As presented in Fig.…”
