A Novel Architectural Concept for Enhanced 5G Network Facilities

Abstract: Abstract. The 5G ESSENCE project's context is based on the concept of Edge Cloud Computing and Small Cell-as-a-Service (SCaaS) -as both have been previously identified in the SESAME 5G-PPP project of phase 1-and further "promotes" their role and/or influences within the related 5G vertical markets. 5G ESSENCE's core innovation is focused upon the development/provision of a highly flexible and scalable platform, offering benefits to the involved market actors. The present work identifies a variety of challenges… Show more

“…1, where the working architecture is illustrated with specific emphasis upon the functional elements and interfaces. The corresponding system is equipped with a two-tier virtualised execution environment, materialised in the form of the Edge DC (Data Centre), which allows also the provision of MEC capabilities to the mobile operators for enhancing the user experience and the agility in the service delivery [16][17][18].…”

“…Perhaps the ones most relevant are: Orion [41], SESAME [39] and ESSENCE [40]. However, these works do not consider the use of shared spectrum and its implications, the main focus of this paper.…”

“…Among other issues, the modern service-driven 5G network architectures intent to deal with and cover a wider set of diversified mobile service requirements, via a flexible and reliable way. With Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualisation efficiently supporting the underlying physical infrastructure, the related 5G environment can "cloudify" access, transport, and core networks in a very comprehensible and via a quite reliable manner ( [10], [11]). Cloud adoption allows for better support for diversified 5G services and, furthermore, it enables the "key technologies" of end-to-end network slicing, on-demand deployment of service anchors and component-based network functions.…”
