Abstract: A new pterosaur, Afrotapejara zouhri gen. et sp. is described on the basis of a partial rostral fragment from the Cretaceous Kem Kem beds of Takmout, near Erfoud in southern Morocco. The taxon is distinguished from all other Tapejaridae on the possession of a dorsal expansion of the rostral margin a short distance from the rostral tip. Tapejaroid features include edentuly, expansion of the rostral median crest and the presence of small foramina on the lateral margins and occlusal surface. The new specimen is t… Show more

“…Identification of BSP 1997 I 67 as tapejarid is supported by the recent discovery, in the Kem Kem group, of additional tapejarid material recently described by Martill et al (2020). This new material assigned to a new taxon, Afrotapejara zouhrii Martill et al, 2020, suggests that a fragmentary rostrum, MN 7054-V, described by Kellner et al (2007: fig. 1) is also tapejarid.…”

“…By contrast other edentulous pterosaurs either have a low mandibular crest (thalassodromeids) or none at all (pteranodontians, chaoyangopterids, azhdarchids) (Witton 2009, Vullo et al 2012. “…The pterosaur clade Tapejaridae was a major component of Early Cretaceous continental faunas, achieving a widespread distribution in Gondwana and Eurasia (e.g. [ 1 – 3 ]). Tapejarids are characterized by their edentulous jaws and often huge cranial crests [ 1 , 2 ], and are sometimes inferred to have had an herbivorous diet [ 4 ].…”

“…They are all the more prominent because of a unique conspicuously downturned anterior rostrum and mandible (Kellner, 2004;Wellnhofer and Kellner, 1991). First described from the Lower cretaceous of South America (Kellner, 2004;Wellnhofer and Kellner, 1991) the Tapejaridae have subsequently been reported from China (Wang and Zhou, 2003;Li et al, 2003;Lü et al, , 2016, Europe (Vullo, et al, 2012), and in Africa from Morocco (Wellnhofer and Buffetaut, 2003;Martill et al, 2020) and an unsubstantiated claim from Niger (Blackburn and Sereno, 2002).…”
