A new species of sea anemone (Saccactis coliumensis n. sp.) living under hypoxic conditions on the central Chilean shelf

Abstract: The new species Saccactis coliumensis is described with an emendation of genus Saccactis Lager, 1911 (family Actiniidae). The taxonomic relations of the genus are discussed giving additional information on Isoulactis chilensis Carlgren, 1959 and Isocradactis magna sensu Carlgren, 1924. The terms "verrucae", "vesicles" and "acrorhagi" are discussed and taxonomically valuated. The anemone S. coliumensis hves in eutrophicated sediments on the central Chilean shelf that is at least temporarily under the impact of d… Show more

“…In contrast, the probable absence of tentacle spirocysts is considered of only generic or specific value, as there seems to be a general trend in endomyarian anemones to reduce the tentacle spirocysts both in size and abundance (e.g. Riemann-Ziirneck & Gallardo, 1990) with some of the family Haloclavidae obviously lacking them totally (Carlgren, 1940(Carlgren, ,1949. Similarly, the tentacle sphincters of Iosactis are valued as being of generic rank only, as they are obviously primitive characters which may be retained in some sporadic cases.…”

“…Likewise, Nemactis primula (Drayton in Dana, 1846) has been exclusively reported for the central region (Lima, ~5%). Recent reports (Spano et al ., 2022) indicate that Oulactis coliumensis (Riemann-Zürneck & Gallardo, 1990) inhabit the central and southern coasts.…”
