(1) Abstract: The study presents the first species list for holothurians from the coast of the State of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. The list was made based on the study of specimens deposited in the Invertebrate Collection Paulo Young, Federal University of Paraíba. A total of 16 species from seven families of Holothuroidea were recorded. This paper contributes to the biodiversity studies from the northeast coast of Brazil.(

Scientific collections represent a highly relevant social legacy. They provide a source for research and production of human resources at several academic levels and play a key role for the preservation of biodiversity. The Invertebrate Collection Paulo Young (CIPY), held at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), contains one of the most complete collections of shallow water marine invertebrates from Northeastern Brazil. It contains about 18,000 catalogued samples, and circa 2-3 times more samples awaiting identification and registration. The samples were collected in a variety of natural and artificial marine environments (e. g., coastal reefs, mangroves, and shipwrecks). The main collection is subdivided into seven main groups (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Annelida, Crustacea, Echinodermata, and Ascidiacea), and other smaller groups (Bryozoa, Echiura, Sipuncula, Pycnogonida, Enteropneusta, and marine Turbellaria). Using only identified and registered samples, we catalogued 285 species among the phyla Porifera (89 spp.), Cnidaria (93 spp.), and Echinodermata (103 spp.). The collection has 36 types of species (including three Porifera, one Cnidaria, and four Echinodermata). Considering its representativeness, this collection has a valuable record of Brazilian national marine diversity. Thus, the CIPY deserves to be known, recognized, and made available for study.

Expansion of the genus Massinium (Holothuroidea: Thyonidae) to the American continent and description of a new species

Introduction: The genus Massinium includes 11 species, most from the Indo Pacific Ocean, and had not previously being reported from the American continent. Objective: To present the new record of the genus Massinium and describe a new species of this genus. Methods: Material collection was done by SCUBA-diving to depths of a maximum of 9 m. Results: Massinium ocumichoensis sp. nov. is described from seven specimens that extends the range of the genus to the American continent (Guerrero, Michoacan and Jalisco, Mexico). The new species lives in sandy-rocky substrata, from 2 to 16 m deep. It is distinguished from its congeneric species by a combination of morphological characters: mid-dorsal slightly bigger pseudobuttons (40-60 μm), and tables in the body wall. A taxonomic key for distinguishing the species of Massinium is provided. Conclusions: The geographic range of the genus Massinium is extended to the Mexican Pacific with M. ocumichoensis sp. nov.
