A new species of Heterangaeus Alexander, 1925 crane flies (Diptera: Pediciidae) from north-central Mongolia with first description of the larva for the genus

Abstract: A new species of Pediciidae, Heterangaeus mongolicus is described from specimens collected during the fieldwork of the Mongolian Aquatic Insect Survey Project in north-central Mongolia, Tov Aimag (district). Descriptions and illustrations of the distinguishing morphological features are provided. Habitat information is presented. Female ovipositor and larvae of Heterangaeus are described and illustrated for the first time. This discovery of Heterangaeus in Mongolia represents a 1700 kilometer extension of the … Show more

“…For example, Gelhaus and Podenas (2006) in a study of crane flies ( Tipuloidea ) from the same Lake Hövsgöl watershed noted that those species with a disjunct distribution in northern Mongolia and the Russian Far East comprised 9.4% of the total crane fly fauna, or 8 out of 85 species found. A similar disjunction was again recently noted where a new species was found in the crane fly genus Heterangeus in northern Mongolia (Hentiy mountains); the genus was known previously only from the Russian Far East, Korean peninsula and Japan ( Podenas, Podeniene and Gelhaus, 2014 ).…”

“…1.5 in 2001 to almost 3 authors per paper fifteen years later. However, the benefits of this tendency of team work are not that clear: Alexander's papers remain highly regarded by current tipuloid workers (e.g., Ribeiro, 2009;Podenas et al, 2014;Young, 2014), but it is unpredictable if the same would be valid for recent papers with multiple authors.…”

“…The Tipuloidea fauna in central Asia are composed of primarily Palearctic species, including central Asian, endemic Mongolian, endemic Kazakhstanian, and apparently disjunct distributions (between central Asian and western Palearctic or Palearctic Far Eastern) [2][3][4][5][6]. Prior research focused on Mongolia has included the description of 13 new species of crane flies in Tipulidae, Limoniidae, and Pediciidae [7][8][9][10][11][12], a review of Cylindrotomidae [12], and first descriptions of immature stages [13][14][15][16]. Parallel research, focused on Kazakhstan from 2008-2021, has described eight new species of crane flies in Limoniidae and Pediciidae [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] and included a review of all major crane fly groups [3][4][5][6][24][25][26][27][28], with many new country and regional records.…”
