A New Modifier for Silica in Reinforcing SBR Elastomers for the Tyre Industry

Abstract: A new alkoxysilane was used to reduce the hydrophilic character of the silica used in reinforcing styrene/butadiene elastomers for the tyre industry. The surface properties of silica modified with 17 wt.‐% of this silane were estimated by inverse GC. A clear change from hydrophilic to hydrophobic character was observed. Styrene/butadiene copolymers loaded with modified silicas were characterized were characterized using vulcanization tests, stress/strain measurements and morphological analysis. The best tensil… Show more

“…In the polymer field such a modification plays an important role in promoting adhesion between powder and polymer, in improving the disperdibility of oxide powders into polymer matrix (Niedermeier et al 2002;Kim and Vanderkooi 2002;Wang et al 1991;Wang and Wolff 1992;Wolff et al 1994aWolff et al , 1994bEvans and Waddell 1995;Wang 1998;Schuster et al 1996;Costa et al 2003;Castellano et al 2005;Fröhlich et al 2005;Hunsche et al 1998;Ramier et al 2007;Bertora et al 2011). …”

“…Modified-silica with the grafted PB showed a decrease in the number of OH-groups on the surface to the same level as that of silica with TESPT, due to the influence of the shielding effect of the grafted PB. The decrease of hydrophilic character of the surface modified silica further lead to a reduction of filler-filler interaction and an improvement of filler dispersion in the rubber matrix [16].…”

“…Silane grafted onto polybutadiene was done in solution under nitrogen atmosphere [15][16][17]. The solution state is known to provide a better control of the reaction compared to the melt state, but is environmentally unfriendly and provides only a small amount of grafted polymer per batch.…”

“…The morphology with a rough surface is very interesting for ERF because it gives stronger ER effect compared to a smooth surface [16,[39][40]. OH silanol groups [43]. Regarding the ORMOSIL, the second and third decomposition peaks at around 310°C and 500°C corresponded to the IL moiety attached to the silica particle [36,44].…”
