A new method of segmental resection for primary lung cancer: intermediate results

Abstract: Our intermediate results demonstrated that the new pulmonary artery-guided segmentectomy could be an alternative method for selected patients with small lung cancer, particularly with tumors 20 mm or smaller in diameter.

“…there was no difference in median survival between sub-lobar resection and lobectomy, whereas for lesions of 2 to 3 cm in size survival was significantly better after lobectomy. Other studies reported no difference in survival and in local recurrence rate be- (14)(15). These observations areevident also in our study: analyzing patients with stage IA, there was no difference in 5 year survival and local recurrence rate between lobectomy and limited resection.…”

“…The other group reported no difference between segmentectomy and lobectomy in patients with tumors < 2 cm in diameter. 14) These results support segmentectomy as a surgical option to cure small NSCLC. In our study, the 5-year survival rates of VATS segmentectomy were similar to a previous report.…”

“…The favorable 5-y survival of 87.1% in the segmentectomy group was shown against 87.7% in the lobectomy group. The other group reported a lack of difference between segmentectomy and lobectomy in patients with tumors less than 2 cm in diameter [12]. Furthermore, Fernando et al showed improved survival in the lobectomy group compared to segmentectomy for patients with tumors of 2 to 3 cm in diameter even if patients with tumors less than 2 cm showed no difference between segmentectomy and lobectomy [13].…”
