A new control strategy for smoothing of wind farm output using short-term ahead wind speed prediction and Flywheel energy storage system

Abstract: Abstract-With the increased integration of wind energy into power networks it has become more important to have a reliable system for mitigating the fluctuations of output power supplied to the grid. This paper proposes a new control scheme to smooth the output power fluctuations of an aggregated wind firm using Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) and shortterm ahead prediction of wind speed. In the proposed system, the kinetic energy of the FEES is utilized to smooth the output power fluctuations of wind fa… Show more

“…The electrical machine in FESS can be represented by permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and cage induction machine [5]- [7]. In this work, DFIG with secondary excitation is considered as FESS [6], [9]. Flywheel energy storage system used within these studies is presented in Fig.…”

“…The continuously changing wind speed has a big impact on the power output of the wind farm. A minor change in the wind speed causes a significant variation on the output of the wind farm [3]. Hence, it is necessary to improve the dynamic response of the wind farm by mitigating the fluctuations of wind generator output power [3].…”

“…Energy capacitor system (ECS) [12][13], battery energy storage system (BESS) [14][15][16], superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) [17][18][19], and flywheel energy storage system (FESS) [20] are very effective tools as having both active and reactive power control abilities. STATCOM is also found to be a potential candidate to stabilize fixed speed WTGS [21][22][23].…”
